Food Ideas~~~Food Ideas~~~~Food Ideas~~~ post here! Empty In Case You Don't Know what Food Not Bombs is about, here's a bit of background (courtesy of FNB)

Post  Michael_Donnely Thu Oct 20, 2011 7:13 pm

There are several things we need to address and several tasks to issue to people who are available and willing to volunteer:

-donations
-collections
-who we are getting donations from
I suggest we talk to individuals, the markets around town, farmers, grocery stores, religious organizations, social organizations to donate (I understand many people are at conflict with religion but they have a lot of money generally speaking and should be willing to support us with food, we are all in this together)
-cooking, where can we do this
-pots, pans, resources for feeding and distributing
-water supply
-if reusable washing stations, this will be hard first off
-what time
-how frequent
-number of people we will be feeding
-getting gloves and serving people to keep sanitation to a max
-trying to get a person who has a permit for cooking (if it's even applicable in a park)

REMEMBER FNB IS VEGETARIAN AND OR VEGAN ALL MEAT DONATIONS WILL NEED TO BE SPECIFIED AND SEPARATED
Ideally it would be great to have ingredient lists for all prepared food

If you have suggestions or things to add forward it to ALL of us. Forward all.
I will not be able to run this if there are not adequate volunteers, I am in school and very busy. So tell your friends and family and strangers to participate.

ATTACHED IS A sheet for donations there are two per document, to save paper you can print two to a page by changing your printer settings.
Make sure you sign them Smile

It would be nice to see who can cover where so we don't do repeat asks for donations.

To Who it May Concern,

We are writing to you on behalf of the London Food Not Bombs (FNB). FNB is a non-profit transnational group that strives to provide free vegan and/or vegetarian meals for community members. The mission of FNB is to address the growing issues of hunger, poverty, homelessness, and sustainability within our community. The London FNB chapter has been active for over six years and serves a hot meal on the last Sunday of each month in rotating locations. On occasion FNB will also serve for larger community-run events.

As FNB is a non-profit initiative we run solely off of community volunteers, donations, and our community garden. We are looking to build a relationship with you in order to sustain this wonderful initiative. With this, if you were able to donate any resources to FNB it would be greatly appreciated by all of the individuals who run FNB, as well as the people who it serves. Food wastage is very prevalent in our society and FNB would gladly accept donations that would otherwise be disposed of after your business closes for the evening. We do pick ups for food donations typically on Saturdays, but other arrangements can be made. All donations are joyously welcomed.

FNB is an image of community members caring for community members.

Thank you for your time,

Sincerely,

Terri says: "I can help with donation of plastic plates, and bowls. Potato curry or chick pea curry are always inexpensive and hearty meals. Having people bring food potluck style seems like a good idea. Perhaps some dishes in crock pots to keep warm would work as well. I can bring a batch of chickpeas. Also if someone is interested having a supply of wraps is another inexpensive meal and requires no cutlery or dishes. Tuna, egg, veggie, they all work well."

Design of a "bento washer": Large tray or bucket at bottom to catch water. It needs a rack that can hold a large water dispenser bottle (however the water inside should better be common tap water rather than the original RO water, so it's a dispenser bottle "converted" into a tap water dispenser)

detergent: crushed lemon slices, lemon juice, maybe mixed with baking soda. don't use soap or anything like that. Set a box of the lemon-soda detergent next to the washer. Wash the utensils with a lemon slice. Conserve water when washing utensils.

Disposal of dirty water will require Waste Management. A pickup truck will be great help. You just empty the water tray into some industrial bucket and ship it off to a green disposal site or whatever way that is green to dispose of it.

Toothbrushing will create logistic problem. So, chewing gum disposal and dental floss disposal should be centralized. Also these necessities should be made available as hygiene necessities.

Heat for cooking: It is called a Hot Pot Stove, or Shabu Shabu Stove. It can be found in london . Small enough to be carried in a mail bag. Uses propane i think. If you have the Hot Pot Stove, you can make hot tea, coffee, and beef tea, and marmite tea, and cook instant noodles.

But, a foldable table is the FOUNDATION to all these wonderful things.

And, bring lots of THERMOS!

What do you guys think of this:

One of those foldable light plastic tables, easily transported by a pickup.
(any ethical problem regarding this?)

Table sets up at "the park", perhaps on the sand. Covered by paper or plastic-/barbage bag-tablecloth
(any ethical problem regarding this?)

Once a table like that set up, "food ppl" can just bring in hot food, potluck style. I am partial to *potato curry, *bulk barn multigrains cereals and peas and beans. Sometimes, good community samaritan may make a big batch of potato curry and rice and put large pots of these on table. For utensils see below
(any ethical problem regarding this?)

Hot beef-tea and veggie marmite tea is lifesaver. For beef-tea, you only need hot water and Bovril, which is cheap. For marmite tea, you only need hot water and veggie marmite, which is expensive. Beef-tea can be clearly labeled non-veggie. Easily transportable by thermo. Stuff can be purchased at corporate big box super markets, but may also be purchased at mom n pop stores? If you put chop garlic or chopped shallot roots in beef or marmite tea, prevents common cold. lifesaver. Or, Miso tea is veggie too.
(any ethical problem regarding this?)

Utensils: can both be decentralized and centralized. Mugs and washable aluminum bento boxes are good environmentally conscious accessories. But washing these need to be centralized i guess. Maybe a simple contraption made of a water dispenser on top and a bucket at the bottom might solve this problem.
Plastic or paper utensils, if centrally recycled, may or may not be environmentally ethical. It's a matter of opinion. But if we do distribute them, avoid a glut of them coming into the recycle bin. Be utmost conservateur about their use.
(any ethical problem regarding this?)

Food ppl should absolutely work together with waste disposal ppl. i.e. same team.
(any ethical problem regarding this?)

Design the "occupy combat ration box" which contain items that require the least care in terms of waste disposal, utensil washing. Basically, "neat food", not "messy food".
(any ethical problem regarding this?)
